Escaping the trauma of her grandfather’s persecution and torture, Gabriela’s family fled Chile’s dictatorship and went into exile in Spain. Forty years later, Gabriela returns to reopen the house they left behind.
As she restores it, she accompanies her grandparents through their aging with tenderness — turning love into a powerful force against the pain of the past.
DIRECTORS’ BIOGRAPHY
Gabriela Pena and Picho García are a creative duo based in Valparaíso, Chile, focused on personal cinema. In 2024, they co-directed Familia GAE, a hybrid short film that premiered at the True/False Film Festival (USA) and was selected for Camden IFF (USA), DC/DOX (USA), Family Film Project (Portugal), and the Sapporo Film Festival (Japan). The film won Best Film at the Santiago International Film Festival (Chile) and received numerous awards in the country.
In 2021, they premiered Zoila, a feature-length documentary directed by Gabriela and produced by Picho, which won Best Film in the “Gender and Generations” competition at the Buenos Aires International Documentary Film Festival (Argentina). They are currently co-directing the feature-length documentary Aquí se escucha el silencio (Where the silence is heard): a Chilean-Spanish co-production supported by the Sundance Institute and Chicken&Egg Films.
